Minecraft is popular for a number of reasons, including its creative potential and the freedom it affords in its gameplay. The most important reason, however, is how much better the overall experience is when you play with friends. Especially for young people at a time when social gatherings are at a premium, Minecraft can be more than just a game, it can be a space to hang out.
Playing Minecraft with friends works a bit differently than other games. If you’re new to blocky sandbox survival craze, then we’ve got a quick guide to get you started.
How to Play Minecraft with Friends on a Server
One of the ways you can play Minecraft with friends is via a server. If you have your own server, you can use the IP or web address to connect to it via the Multiplayer menu and then by clicking the Add Server button. It’s the same if you want to join a friend’s Minecraft server. You can check out our top Minecraft server hosts if you’re interested in starting your own private playground.
Another way to play together is over a local area network (LAN). This means that you and your friends need to be connected to the same network, like for instance your home Wifi.
To do this follow the next steps:
- Everyone needs to be connected to the same network
- One person needs to start a Single Player world or open an existing one
- Then head into the game menu to Open To LAN. This will ask you what type of game you want.
- Once you’ve made your selection, you can start your LAN world.
- The rest of your friends can join via the Multiplayer menu. They should be able to see your Minecraft world automatically and log in.
These options are primarily for the PC versions of Minecraft. For consoles and mobile devices, you can join LAN games like with PC. For online, though, there are three dedicated servers to choose from in order to play Minecraft with friends.
You also have the option of playing with up to 10 friends on the Minecraft Realms service. You can learn more about setting it up by going to the official Minecraft Reals site.
What Can You Do in Minecraft with Your Friends?
Once you’ve figured out how to play Minecraft with friends, then the sky is pretty much the limit. For starters, you can play Survival mode together, which makes infinitely more fun than just going at it alone. You can split the work by going in different directions to find resources then pool them together to build up your shelter more efficiently. There’s also the possibility to challenge each other by making individual shelters to see who can survive the longest.
Let’s also not forget Creative mode. With friends, Minecraft Creative is just a whole other experience. The more friends you have, the bigger and more expansive the worlds you can create together in lesser time. Goofing around is highly encouraged!
